As we step into the last month of summer, we notice the waves of visitors beginning to slow as mainland school years kick back into gear. This makes August a particularly sweet time to experience our island with a bit more breathing room.
Last week brought an unexpected reminder of how quickly things can change when we faced a significant tsunami warning following an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia's coast. Our state and county officials responded swiftly and
professionally, coordinating evacuations across coastal areas as waves were expected to reach up to 10 feet in some locations.Â
Â
Thankfully, we only experienced a dramatic
water level drop at Kahului Harbor and some minor flooding, no major damage or injuries occurred! While locals are used to tsunami warnings that don't materialize, I'm grateful our community took this one seriously—especially as our island continues healing from the August 2023 wildfires.
Speaking of which, this Thursday, August 8th, marks two years since those devastating fires, and Kuhinia Maui memorial gatherings will offer opportunities for
residents and visitors to honor the 102 lives lost and celebrate our community's incredible resilience.
Â
Our island is wildly beautiful yet vulnerable, and these moments remind
us why we must treasure this land and treat it with care as it gives us so much in return. Every visitor who comes with respect and aloha helps us protect what makes Maui so extraordinary. We hope to welcome you soon!
