Whether escaping winter or embracing school break, visitors are arriving in Maui ready to soak up the summer.
While the island is buzzing with seasonal energy, it’s also the start of hurricane season, which runs from June through November. The outlook for 2025 calls for a near-normal number of tropical systems, and while the risk remains low, the Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) encourages everyone—residents
and visitors alike—to be “Two Weeks Ready” with food, water, medications, and supplies. Stay alert and informed by signing up for MEMA alerts or downloading the Genasys Protect app for real-time updates.
In addition to seasonal safety, there’s progress on a major infrastructure project that will benefit both the local community and travelers for years to come. The realignment of the Honoapiʻilani Highway between Olowalu and Ukumehame—just beyond the sea cliff turns between Central and West Maui—is moving forward, with plans to relocate the vulnerable coastal stretch inland by 2030. As part of this vision, community groups are working together to reimagine the old
roadway into accessible public spaces—featuring native plant restoration, beach access boardwalks, and safer pathways for walking and biking.
