Aloha kākou,
February is ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Month, a time to celebrate and honor the Hawaiian language, a vital part of Hawaiʻi’s culture and identity. You may have heard phrases like Mālama ʻĀina (to care for the land) and Kuleana (a personal sense of responsibility and sacred duty), both of which reflect core values in everyday life in Hawai'i.
The Hawaiian language faced near extinction after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893, and by 1896, it was banned from being taught in schools and discouraged from being spoken at home. For decades, ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi
faded, but today, thanks to Hawaiian immersion programs and revitalization efforts, it is making a powerful resurgence, ensuring future generations grow up connected to their language and culture.
As you plan your Maui vacation, we invite you to embrace the spirit of aloha by learning the true meaning behind typical phrases you might have seen or heard. One of our favorites?
Kina'ole - Doing the right thing in the right way, at the right time, in the right place, to the right person, for the right reason, with the right feeling.
Safe Travels,
Tiffany
