As summer progresses, we're thrilled to see an uptick in visitors on the island, especially as we approach the festive Independence Day weekend. Events are in full swing, offering a vibrant atmosphere for all.
August is only one month away and it marks 1 year since the devastating fires. While significant progress has been made, 75% of displaced survivors remain in temporary housing, and the median income has dropped by 25% compared to pre-fire
levels. The economic impact is far-reaching, affecting not just the survivors but all residents, especially those whose livelihoods depend on tourism.
There is some good news:
sections of Waihikuli and other parts of Lahaina are being removed from the unsafe water advisory map. Progress continues in wastewater line repairs, and in areas where home lots have been cleared, rebuilding is set to begin. A few homes that were spared are preparing to welcome residents back, pending the restoration of safe water and sewage services.
