As the vibrant hues of spring paint the landscape of Maui in lush greens and delicate jacaranda blossoms, it's a time for renewal and rejuvenation.
Recovery Updates:
🔥 Fire Debris Removal Progress: By mid-March, nearly 20% of the fire debris, equivalent to 306 properties, had been successfully cleared. Central Maui has been designated for the permanent fire debris removal site. Anticipate increased traffic in and out of West Maui in the days ahead.
🏫 Educational Endeavors: The completion of a temporary school in Kapalua marks a significant milestone in the aftermath of the destruction of King Kamehameha III Elementary School. Ground has also been broken for another temporary school to serve the Sacred Hearts Pre-K through
12th grade community.
🛠️ Infrastructure Inspections and Improvements: Plans for a new Kahana Well has began, aimed at enhancing water reliability and providing a
much-needed water source in West Maui.
🏘️ Housing Initiatives: Despite ongoing challenges, progress has been made in the construction of modular homes, temporary
housing units, and the conversion of a former Kihei hotel. Efforts to expedite affordable housing projects, particularly in West Maui, are underway. Furthermore, a significant number of short-term rentals have transitioned into long-term accommodations.
🔥🌀 Preventative Measures: Proactive steps are being taken to mitigate future risks, including the installation of early wildfire detection systems and wind sensors, as well as creating a Category 3 hurricane recovery center.
As we embrace the beauty of spring and the promise of renewal, let's also recognize the resilience and determination of the Maui community in navigating through these challenging times. As always, mahalo for your ongoing support!
