Words cannot describe the devastation our island has experienced. As a resident of West Maui since 2011, the impact of this tragedy resonates deeply within me. Fate led me
to relocate to Central Maui just before the recent events, ensuring the safety of my family. However, the same cannot be said for many of my friends and island 'ohana.
Amidst this tragedy,
the unwavering support from our extended 'ohana, including you, our cherished Maui visitors, has been nothing short of overwhelming. Your donations, unyielding support, and boundless love have touched us deeply. I'm acutely aware that this disaster has also left a void in your hearts, as I understand the profound attachment you hold for our island and the countless memories it holds for you.
This past week has been a tumultuous mix of shock, anguish, fear, and heartbreak. We are engulfed in grief – for our beloved town of Lāhainā, once the heartbeat of the Hawaiian kingdom, and for our loved ones who have lost everything – their possessions, jobs, pets, transportation, and
their sense of normalcy. Our community, however, has risen admirably in the face of this catastrophe.
While media outlets scramble for stories, let me offer you a firsthand glimpse of the
situation. During the the initial days, West Maui was cut off from the rest of the island due to treacherous road conditions caused by fallen power lines and debris. Those who lost everything found themselves living in cars, on the streets, beaches, or seeking refuge with friends. With communication and power out for many days, no one could reach each other to see if their loved ones were alive. Meanwhile food spoiled, water turned unsanitary, gas supplies depleted, and with minimal government
assistance, the situation was dire.
Amidst of this chaos, our small businesses and tight-knit community rallied, providing medical supplies, nourishment, clean water, and essential
provisions via boats, jet skis, vans, and even helicopters. Our neighbors from Moloka'i and Oahu extended their helping hands, sailing over with essential supplies, bridging the gap that official aid had yet to fill. Anyone with an extra hand was lending it to help West Maui in any way they knew how.
Finally, disaster relief arrived. Power is gradually being restored, cell phones are starting to work, medical and psychological support is reaching those in need, and the displaced are being placed in hotels and vacation rentals for the time being.
Progress is being made, but there is a long road ahead. I will try to keep you updated via email. Additionally, our Instagram and other social platforms share daily doses of positivity, avenues to contribute, all through the lens of a local trying to keep this island economy afloat and West Maui
residents respected and cared for.
In this challenging time, your continued support fuels our determination to rebuild, to heal, and to emerge stronger together. From the depths of our
hearts, we extend our gratitude for your empathy, solidarity, and your love for our cherished Maui.
Warmest Mahalo,
Tiffany
