In the wake of the devastating fires that swept across Maui on August 8th, we find ourselves two months down the path of recovery, determined and resilient. The island has been profoundly impacted, and we are here to provide you with an update on our ongoing efforts to rebuild and heal.
Where we are in the Rebuild:
- Currently in Phase 1: EPA is almost through with the clearing of hazardous materials and displaced residents are returning to their properties in sections. Residents can finally begin finding closure as well as obtaining evidence for their insurance claims.
- We are heartened to report that water is becoming safe in areas around the affected burn zones, with wastewater systems being repaired and activated, and rigorous monitoring of air and ocean water.
- Next, Phase 2: Property owners must grant permission to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or private contractors to remove the fire debris. Then an environmental
assessment will be made to ensure it is safe to rebuild.
The Impacts and Re-opening
- Economy: Over $13 million in daily visitor spending was lost in the weeks following the fire and a staggering 10,000 unemployment claims have been filed.
- Phased Reopening of West Maui:
- October 8th marked the reopening of Kapalua to Kahana.
- After assessing Phase 1, Mahinahina to Maui Kaʻanapali Villas will open to visitors.
- Finally the Ka'anapali area from the Royal Lahaina Resort to the Hyatt Regency will open, with special consideration given to housing options for displaced residents.
Your presence helps stimulate our economy and supports the local families who have been resilient throughout these challenging times. Below we share a few ways in which you can contribute,
whether you're here on the island or from afar. Thank you for standing with us as we work towards a brighter future for Maui.
Safe Travels,
