We want to express our deepest gratitude for your love and support for Maui during these trying times.
As the initial shock of the recent deadly wildfires slowly wears off, the reality of our situation has set in, and we recognize the monumental challenges ahead in our journey towards recovery. We are truly heartbroken, but together, we will overcome these obstacles and emerge stronger than ever.
Here's a quick snapshot of our present situation:
- Housing: Over 12,000 residents were displaced by the fires, and currently, 7,514 people
are residing in temporary housing, while others have sought refuge with loved ones or have left the island.
- Hazardous Cleanup: We are in the 1st phase of recovery which involves the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) coming in to identify and remove hazards like asbestos, explosives/propane tanks, and harmful chemicals. Next, health and building inspectors must ensure it is safe for
residents and business owners to re-enter the affected areas. This process is expected to take at least three months.
- Debris Cleanup: Subsequently, a comprehensive debris cleanup effort will commence, which is anticipated to take at least six months. County and state officials are committed to involving local residents and businesses in this process. They are currently offering free training
programs to empower our local workforce, creating new job opportunities as well.
- Rebuilding Lāhainā: It is expected to be at least a year before the physical rebuilding of Lāhainā begins, likely more. Officials say they are dedicated to collaborating with the community and cultural advisors to ensure that the reconstruction process respects Lāhainā's heritage and values.
Below are resources that provide specific updates on various aspects of Maui's recovery. Additionally, we invite you to read our latest blog post, which outlines how visitors can contribute to Maui's recovery by volunteering during their vacation.
In these trying times, your support means the world to us. We continue to welcome you back to our island paradise with open arms in every region except Lāhainā Town while we heal.
Safe Travels,
Tiffany
